Master of Arts in Theology (MTh)

The Master of Arts in Theology programme provides an initial postgraduate qualification in academic theology. This degree principally emphasises the development of theological understanding while also incorporating an element of professional practice. Full-time candidates may complete the programme in approximately two years, whereas part-time students must fulfil all requirements within six years of enrolment.

The Master of Arts program has the following principal objectives:
  • to develop in students a graduate-level competence in the basic areas of theological inquiry

  • to provide a foundation for further graduate research and study

Course Requirements

Students must complete thirty-six (36) hours of course work. These credits should be distributed in the following areas:
  • 9 credits hours in Sacred Scripture

  • 12 credit hours in Dogmatic/Sacramental/Liturgical Theology

  • 6 credit hours in Moral Theology

  • 3 credit hours in Church History

  • 6 credit hours in Elective courses (from any of the above mentioned areas)

Students registered on the MAT programme who wish to develop a secondary focus on professional practice are highly recommended to include PS 543 – Theology and Methodology of Christian Ministry as part of their electives.

Candidates may choose either a general pathway in theological studies or opt to specialise in one of two areas: Biblical Studies, or Systematic Theology (covering dogmatic, sacramental, and liturgical theology).

A specialisation in either field requires the completion of 18 credit hours. Regardless, when designing their degree through careful course selection, it is essential that students establish a strong foundation for more advanced research by first undertaking key introductory modules.

In consultation with an academic adviser, and taking into account the candidate’s academic background and professional aspirations, students may be required to complete courses in the following areas:

Sacred Scripture

SS 510 Scripture Methods and Pentateuch - required course
SS 519 Prophetic and Apocalyptic Literature
SS 617 Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke
SS 717 Pauline Literature

Systematic Theology

SY 511 Foundations in Theology
SY 513 The Christian Doctrine of God
SY 611 Christology
SY 711 Theology of Church
SY 713 Theology of Creation and Grace

Moral Theology

MO 607 Fundamental Moral Theology
MO 608 Catholic Social Thought

Credits earned in such courses are included among the thirty-six (36) hours required for the Master of Arts degree.

Integration and Assessment

Upon completion of coursework, students undertake written comprehensive examinations. These assessments are designed to demonstrate their ability to integrate theological knowledge with their vocation to serve both the Church and the wider world. Examination scheduling is arranged in consultation with the Academic Dean.

Thesis or Research Papers

The research element of the programme may be satisfied through one of two options:
(a) Submission of a thesis, developed under the guidance of a full-time Seminary faculty member.
(b) Submission of three substantial research papers, each written under the supervision of a full-time member of the Seminary faculty.
